F-L staff report
Former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez regained the title Saturday night with a split decision over the man who lifted it from him nearly two years ago.
Two judges scored the fight 48-47 for Alvarez as did Fight-Ledger.com; the third had Chandler winning 48-47.
Alvarez rarely took a backward during the Bellator 106 main event, but also ate numerous straight right jabs from defending champion Michael Chandler. In the fourth round, Chandler applied a rear-naked choke that nearly finished Alvarez.
But on this night, Alvarez would not give in. He survived the submission attempt and held on to earn the decision in a back-and-forth affair.
Alvarez improved to 25-3, while Chandler, who was making his third title defense, suffered his first professional loss. He is now 12-2.
